Yang Se-jong Gains Weight for Role in Disney+ Series 'Low Life'

Yang Se-jong revealed that he gained weight for his role in the Disney+ original series 'Low Life'.

Recently, at a café in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul, actor Yang Se-jong, who stars in the series, shared insights about his role.

'Low Life' is set in 1977 and tells the story of villagers who gather to claim a treasure ship buried under the sea. The series is based on the webtoon 'Fine'.

Yang Se-jong plays the role of Oh Hee-dong, a novice who becomes enamored with money. Hee-dong has been stealing since childhood, following his uncle Oh Kwan-seok, played by Ryu Seung-ryong. He embarks on a journey to retrieve the treasure buried in the Shinan Sea, where he encounters Yang Jeong-sook, played by Lim Soo-jung, and Sun-ja, a café employee played by Kim Min, developing complex emotions along the way.

Yang Se-jong expressed, "When I first read the script, my heart started racing, and I immediately decided to take the role the next day. The project itself was intriguing, and Hee-dong's raw and rugged character appealed to me." When asked why he thought the director cast him, he replied, "The director knew me for my 'pretty boy' image. Perhaps they gave me the script to show a contrasting side."

Yang Se-jong appreciated Oh Hee-dong's "ruggedness". He noted, "He speaks informally to elders and swears freely. I thought it would be fitting to gain 6-7 kg for this role, unlike when filming a romance."

Yang Se-jong described Oh Hee-dong as having a "wolf-like" quality. He added, "His ruggedness and impulsive actions were appealing. In reality, most people don't live impulsively; they are cautious and patient. Portraying such a character was refreshing." He also mentioned, "There was a sense of catharsis and thrill. Except for the scene where I get slapped by my uncle in Mokpo, the rest was quite liberating."
