Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled its new series 'Butterfly', starring and executive produced by Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim. The series marks the first American drama appearance for actress Kim Tae-hee, who is stepping onto the global stage.
On the 21st, a press conference for 'Butterfly' was held at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. Attendees included Daniel Dae Kim, Reina Hardesty, Kim Ji-hoon, Kim Tae-hee, and Sean Richard.
'Butterfly' follows the story of David Jung (played by Daniel Dae Kim), a former U.S. intelligence officer shrouded in mystery, and Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a current agent sent to eliminate him.
Daniel Dae Kim, who stars in and executive produces 'Butterfly', shared, "This story reflects my life. I was born in Busan but immigrated to the U.S. at a young age. However, Korea has never left my heart."
Kim continued, "Being both the executive producer and lead actor allowed me to make creative decisions I couldn't before. I could incorporate my experiences into the project, such as changing a character who wasn't originally Asian in the source material. It reflects the life of a Korean-American, living in the U.S. but returning to Korea."
He added, "I was able to cast actors I admire as a fan, like Kim Tae-hee, Kim Ji-hoon, and Park Hae-soo. It was significant to choose and work with them on this project."
Kim Tae-hee explained her decision to join the series, saying, "This is the most typical Korean woman role I've ever played. There was no reason not to choose this project. I was immediately drawn in after reading the script and quickly read up to episode six."
She added, "Although Eun-joo isn't a character with a lot of screen time, I wanted to portray a relatable role that represents Korean women. If I can present a positive image of Korean women through this project, it would be fulfilling and an honor."
When asked about her first appearance in an American drama, Kim Tae-hee said, "In the past, I've played leading roles that carried the entire project. This time, I support Daniel and Reina, playing a significant supporting role. I hope viewers enjoy the drama as a whole rather than focusing on me. I hope it provides an opportunity for international fans to feel closer to Korea."
Kim Tae-hee also shared, "I wore light makeup and natural hairstyles, choosing the most ordinary outfits. I stood in front of the camera as close to my usual self as possible, and surprisingly, I felt very comfortable. In Korean dramas, there's pressure to look as beautiful as possible, but in this project, I focused on supporting the story. It was a new discovery for me, feeling fresh to stand in front of the camera without embellishment."
Lastly, Kim Tae-hee mentioned receiving advice from her husband, Rain, who had previously entered Hollywood. She said, "From the moment I received this project, my husband encouraged me to take it as a great opportunity. Even when I hesitated about attending the New York premiere, wondering if I should go since I'm not the lead, he insisted I go, saying it was a chance to promote both the drama and myself as an actress. His support allowed me to work on and promote the project with peace of mind."
'Butterfly' will air every Friday and Saturday at 10:40 PM on tvN, starting from the 22nd.
