In SBS’s weekend drama “Goddess of Marriage” set to premiere on Saturday, model-actress Clara plays Cynthia Jung who is the main anchorwoman of KoreaTV and having an affair with her colleague Noh Seung-soo (Jang Hyun-sung) who is married to another woman, but she surprised media while explaining her role in the show during a press conference held on Monday.
She started by introducing the drama as being her savior, probably due to the affection she had for her role. She then revealed her ambition for the role by saying, “I will show an elegant image by portraying Cynthia Jung who has graduated Harvard.” She then explained, “My character may seem negative in the sense that she could destroy a family but she’s definitely the type that exists in this world. She is someone that could give energy and hope to a man that is in a marriage where there is no tension because the wife no longer takes good care of the way she looks” – an unconventional no-guilt perspective and excessively positive attitude towards extramarital affairs that usually destroy households.
Actress Cho Min-soo flared up at Clara’s remark and said, “Hearing this just made me mad! How could one sympathize with such a character?” The audience broke out into laughter and Clara sheepishly backed down. But does Clara’s perspective on married life fit the drama’s aim to ask what it means to be truly happily married? It is questionable how Clara, who said she pleaded the writer to give her the role, convinced the crew that she is an actor that fits the drama. But since we are already talking about it, here is what “Goddess of Marriage” should avoid.
There are a total of four couples in the drama; Ji-hye (Nam Sang-mi) who cannot decide between her longtime boyfriend Tae-wook (Kim Ji-hoon) and soulmate Hyun-woo (Lee Sang-woo) that appears one day, Ji-sun (Cho Min-su) and Jang-soo (Kwon Hae-hyo) who married because Ji-sun got pregnant, Tae-jin (Kim Jung-tae) who married Hye-jung (Lee Tae-ran) only for his wealth, and Eun-hee (Jang Young-nam) who married Seung-soo (Jang Hyun-sung) for his looks. All four couples will work toward finding the answer to what being truly happily married is about.
But among them, there are two affairs – Mi-ra (Sim Yi-young) who seduces Tae-jin and Cynthia Jung who has an affair with Seung-soo. And there have been so many dramas where the husband, either a rich man or just sick of his wife, has an affair with the sexy colleague at work. A preview clip shown at the press conference also revealed a heated bed scene between Seung-soo and Cynthia Jung.
Hopefully the drama will not try to draw attention by repeating the typical stories involving infidelities and provocative scenes of them for the story that says it aims to show how the characters grow through serious reflection on their marriages.
