What is more important to dating someone: the sincerity of your emotions or having the skills to make that person fall for you?
This is a question you have probably asked yourself at least once if you have ever been in love and have been nervous because of that love. Yet you have also probably never heard the right answer to this so there is a drama that came forward in an attempt to give you one: cable channel tvN’s “Dating Agency: Cyrano,” a familiar title due to a 2010 movie of the same name.
In the 16-part show, which has aired five episodes so far, even the agents of the dating agency that manipulates dating techniques, have different opinions on the question. So viewers have no answer yet. But time is not on love’s side so TenAsia met with the agents of the dating agency.
Min-young (Choi Sooyoung), the only female of the agency, believes that one’s emotions cannot be manipulated and that everybody dreams of the perfect romance. Hence she always clashes with Byung-hoon (Lee Jong-hyuk) who attributes feelings of romance to one’s hormonal changes. And so far, Byung-hoon has been right! Customers have responded better to the fancy dating techniques Byung-hoon teaches. Mu-jin (Hong Jong-hyun) and A-rang (Cho Yoon-woo), other members of the agency, also agree with the fact that technique is critical to dating. And there is just no way to figuring out what the mysterious chef-next-door Cha Seung-pyo (Lee Chun-hee) thinks.
Nonetheless, TenAsia asked the actors of “Dating Agency: Cyrano” the question: can one’s romantic relationship be manipulated?
Q. Can one’s romantic relationship really be manipulated?
Lee Jong-hyuk : Unlike my character Byung-hoon, I’m very straightforward when it comes to dating someone. It just suits my personality better and I’m not very good at using my brain when it comes to dating. But while shooting this drama, I have thought that I might’ve asked a dating agency like the one in our show for help on dating. Oh yeah, I didn’t have much money when I used to date. Then I guess I wouldn’t have been able to ask for help at all [laughs].
#Lee Jong-hyuk’s dating style? A macho that says dating is all about pushing forward with your emotions! Also a realist that says it would be good to have great dating techniques but that those cannot be bought if you don’t have money.
Choi Sooyoung: I have similar thoughts to my character Min-young fundamentally. I believe that sincerity is most important to dating someone. I also think that you should be loved for who you are. But I think it would be even better if like in the drama, there were actual manipulative techniques you could use to attract someone to you. By working on this drama, I’ve come to realize that being straightforward and sincere are important, but so are having the skills to make the other person like you because those skills are also part of your expression of interest in that person.
#Choi Sooyoung’s dating style? A romancist that believes sincerity is a must! But also a foxy lady who doesn’t think that when you like someone, and you want to make that person like you back, using manipulative techniques to do so doesn’t always go against your sincerity.
Lee Chun-hee: I too tend to think that sincerity is most important. But the manipulating that the dating agency in our show does shouldn’t be considered negative because those skills are about making two people take interest in each other. It’s about helping them to date smarter! I’ve come to think of it as a successful dating technique because it takes off from noticing what the other person likes instead of just focusing on yourself.
#Lee Chun-hee’s dating style: A romancist that believes that the manipulative dating technique is about being considerate to the other person.
Hong Jong-hyun: In the show, Byung-hoon exaggerates and says that romance is just about the changes in one’s hormones, but the manipulating that the dating agency does is to create a common ground with the other person based on the interest one has. So wouldn’t it be most important to find a balance between having the right dating techniques and being sincere?
#Hong Jong-hyun’s dating style? That manipulative techniques are for creating the grounds to identifying with someone. A rational guy who believes dating is about a good combination of sincerity and dating techniques.
Based on the actors’ opinions, sincerity is a prerequisite to being romantically involved with someone but becomes perfect with the ability to deliver that sincerity with dating techniques that will help manipulate that person’s heart. So the answer to “Can one’s romantic relationship be manipulated?” could be: “A moderate amount of manipulation can help make the relationship smoother.”
So where can you learn the skills? Every Mondays and Tuesdays on “Dating Agency:Cyrano.”
